Summary

ApostropheCMS: Import archives can exhaust server storage and deny service

Review scope and evidence limits

Package: @apostrophecms/import-export, version 3.7.0.

Release tag reviewed: @apostrophecms/[email protected], commit 9500b8b0e1d630d5e07fbb5fd2c25ed0943845ce (September 30, 2026).

Current main reviewed: 5ce3732be0ebdebb4db0f8ef160c81e8671157e6.

The importer, gzip extractor, import permission gate, and core permission implementation have no differences between that release tag and the reviewed main. This follow-up is a static remediation review. We have not repeated the original end-to-end reproductions against the latest release or tested a deployed site. Current exploitability and impact therefore still require maintainer validation; the observations below establish that the reported security checks remain absent in public source. The original emailed PDF contains the original reproduction material. Please refer to that existing private attachment.

Import archive extraction lacks resource quotas and failure cleanup

The current gzip extractor handles destination write errors and waits for write completion; those parts of the original report should no longer be treated as unchanged. The import routes also now require a logged-in user before big-upload processing, as covered by GHSA-86wm-68pq-5jwq.

However, extract() still writes expanded archive entries without per-entry, aggregate decompressed-byte, or entry-count quotas. Archive parsing still precedes document-type authorization. If extraction or parsing fails, import() notifies and rethrows before the later storage.remove() call, with no unconditional cleanup around that lifecycle. The reported residual risk is excessive storage consumption and retained extraction/staging artifacts from authenticated imports. Handling a write error and requiring login do not enforce a storage budget.

Suggested remediation: add configurable streaming quotas based on actual decompressed bytes, cap entries and allowed entry types, bound concurrent imports, and clean local and uploadfs artifacts on every failure. Retain continuation artifacts only under explicit ownership, expiry and total-storage limits.

Impact

Crafted input forces the application to consume excessive CPU, memory, or other resources, degrading or denying service. Typical impact: denial of service.

CVE-2026-112955 has a CVSS score of 6.5 (Medium). The vector is network-reachable, low privileges required, and no user interaction. A CVSS score reflects the worst-case severity of the vulnerability, not your specific exposure. Whether this affects your application depends on whether the vulnerable code is present and reachable in your environment. A fixed version is available (3.7.1); upgrading removes the vulnerable code path.

Kodem intelligence

Severity tells you how bad this could be in the worst case. It does not tell you whether you are exposed. Exploitability and impact are functions of runtime truth: whether the vulnerable code is present, reachable, and actually executes in your application. A vulnerable package can sit in your dependency tree and never run.

Kodem, an Intelligent Application Security platform, uses runtime intelligence to reveal which vulnerabilities actually execute in production, so teams prioritize the ones that genuinely matter. Kodem's runtime-powered SCA identifies whether this CVE is reachable in your applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is CVE-2026-112955? CVE-2026-112955 is a medium-severity uncontrolled resource consumption vulnerability in @apostrophecms/import-export (npm), affecting versions < 3.7.1. It is fixed in 3.7.1. Crafted input forces the application to consume excessive CPU, memory, or other resources, degrading or denying service.
  2. How severe is CVE-2026-112955? CVE-2026-112955 has a CVSS score of 6.5 (Medium). This score reflects the worst-case severity of the vulnerability, not your specific exposure. Whether it represents real risk in your environment depends on whether the vulnerable code is present and reachable.
  3. Which versions of @apostrophecms/import-export are affected by CVE-2026-112955? @apostrophecms/import-export (npm) versions < 3.7.1 is affected.
  4. Is there a fix for CVE-2026-112955? Yes. CVE-2026-112955 is fixed in 3.7.1. Upgrade to this version or later.
  5. Is CVE-2026-112955 exploitable, and should I be worried? Whether CVE-2026-112955 is exploitable in your environment depends on whether the vulnerable code is present and reachable. A CVSS score is a worst-case rating; it does not account for your specific deployment, configuration, or usage patterns. Kodem, an Intelligent Application Security platform, uses runtime intelligence to show which vulnerabilities actually execute in production, so you can focus on the ones that represent real risk. 6. What actually determines whether CVE-2026-112955 is exploitable, and how bad it is? Exploitability and impact are not fixed properties of a CVE. They depend on runtime truth: whether the vulnerable code is present, reachable, and actually executes in your application. A high CVSS score on a dependency that never runs is not the same as real risk. Kodem, an Intelligent Application Security platform, uses runtime intelligence to reveal which vulnerabilities actually execute in production, so teams prioritize the ones that genuinely matter.
  7. How do I fix CVE-2026-112955? Upgrade @apostrophecms/import-export to 3.7.1 or later.
